McCurry beats McDonald's in lawsuit

Wed Apr 29, 2009 5:49pm EDT
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Fast food chain McDonald's lost a lawsuit in Malaysia on Wednesday after an appeals court overruled a decision that its trademark had been infringed by a local restaurant called McCurry.

"Where the learned judge, with respect, erred is to assume that McDonald's had a monopoly in the use of the prefix 'Mc' on a signage or in the conduct of business," Judge Gopal Sri Ram said, overturning a 2006 ruling in favor of McDonald's.

The McDonald's operation in this Southeast Asian country of 27 million people is run as franchise by prominent businessman Vincent Tan and has 185 outlets, according to the company website (www.mcdonalds.com/my).

McCurry, by contrast, serves Indian fast food from one restaurant in Kuala Lumpur as well Malaysian dishes such as fish head curry and is short for "Malaysian Chicken Curry," according to the company website.

The International Standard Book Number, or ISBN

The International Standard Book Number, or ISBN , is a unique[1], numeric commercial book identifier based upon the 9-digit Standard Book Numbering (SBN) code created by Gordon Foster, now Emeritus Professor of Statistics at Trinity College, Dublin,[2]for the booksellers and stationers W.H. Smith and others in 1966.[3]

The 10-digit ISBN format was developed by the International Organization for Standardization and was published in 1970 as international standard ISO 2108. (However, the 9-digit SBN code was used in the United Kingdom until 1974.) Currently, the ISO’sTC 46/SC 9 is responsible for the ISBN.

Since 1 January 2007, ISBNs have contained 13 digits, a format that is compatible with Bookland EAN-13s.[4]

A similar numeric identifier, the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), identifies periodical publications such as magazines

An ISBN is assigned to each edition and variation (except reprintings) of a book. The ISBN is 13 digits long if assigned after January 1, 2007, and 10 digits long if assigned before 2007. An International Standard Book Number consists of 4 or 5 parts:

The parts of a 10-digit ISBN and the corresponding EAN-13 and barcode. Note the different check digits in each. The part of the EAN-13 labeled "EAN" is the Bookland country code
  1. for a 13 digit ISBN, a GS1 prefix: 978 or 979
  2. the group identifier, (language-sharing country group)[5]
  3. the publisher code,
  4. the item number, and
  5. checksum character or check digit.

The ISBN parts may be of different lengths, and usually are separated with hyphens or spaces.[6]

Group identifier

The group identifier is a 1 to 5 digit number. The single digit group identifiers are: 0 or 1 for English-speaking countries; 2 for French-speaking countries; 3 for German-speaking countries; 4 for Japanese; 5 for Russian, and 7 for Chinese. An example 5 digit group identifier is 99936, for Bhutan. In general, the groups are 0–7, 80–94, 950–993, 9940–9989, and 99900–99999.[7]

The original standard book number (SBN) had no group identifier, but affixing a zero (0) as prefix to a 9-digit SBN creates a valid 10-digit ISBN. Group identifiers form a prefix code; compare with country calling codes.

Why world economic goes down....

Larry Summers Sleeping at Yesterday’s “Fiscal Responsibility” Summit & Gov. Sonny Predue Should Get an Energy Drink

Posted on 24 February 2009 by admin

FROM the FINANCIAL TIMES

…Lawrence Summers, ex-Harvard president and head of the National Economic Counci, fell asleep on the podium… while major markets indices were hitting a 12-year low…

…Also, it seems Governor Sonny Perdue needs an energy drink from attending the same (I guess very borning) summit…

UPDATE: LAWENCE SUMMERS FALLS ASLEEP AGAIN LISTING TO OBAMA

Maybe Obama should have brought his energy drink of choice,

hype-energy-drink

Dictionary definition of hype: Something deliberately misleading; a deception: “He says that there isn’t any economic crisis at all, that it’s all a hype, to maintain power. Charismatic leaders can only maintain power while a crisis endures, so they will hype up the crisis.”

In reality, people familiar with this summit said it was boring. It wasn’t boring because of the issues. Rather, it was apparent to everyone present that it was a huge publicity stunt designed to give Obama the look-and-feel of doing something about the current deficit without doing much at all.

LIKE an ASSIGNMENT from a SUBSTITUTE TEACHER

“It was like a substitute teacher coming in and giving you an assignment that is totally irrelevant to the path the regular teacher has the class following. Everyone completes the exercise, but no one expects the work to be tested on later.”

Polls indicate the biggest drag on Obama’s approval rating is the growing deficit. (If current trends continue, the United States has years before interest on debt eclipses all tax revenues.) Insiders in the know agree this was about show, and not much else. Why else would you call this event after the biggest expansion of the federal budget, by way of Obama’s spending bill. Had it really and truly been fresh on Obama’s mind, such a spending bill passed days earlier would have not been signed.

So much for change—looks like just a whole heck of a lot more of the same.

"Mata saya berkedip-kedip sebanyak tiga kali kerana menganggap saya melihat benda lain.

Komen: Nanti leh buat kajian, jangan tanam pokok guna tanah, tanam guna badan manusia..erkk~~scary...

Iron Maiden-Rainmaker

My ringtonexxx.....hahaha~~~luv this song...

When I was wandering in the desert,
And was searching for the truth
I heard a choir of angels calling out my name,
I had the feeling that my life would never be the same again
I turn my face towards the barren sun

And I know of the pain that you feel the same as me,
And I dream of the rain as it falls upon the leaves
And the cracks in our lives like the cracks upon the ground,
They are sealed and are now washed away

You tell me we can start the rain
You tell me that we all can change
You tell me we can find something to wash the tears away,
You tell me we can start the rain
You tell me that we all can change
You tell me we can find something to wash the tears...

And I know of the pain that you feel the same as me,
And I dream of the rain as it falls upon the leaves
And the cracks in the ground like the cracks are in our lives,
They are sealed and now far away

You tell me we can start the rain
You tell me that we all can change
You tell me we can find something to wash the tears away,
You tell me we can start the rain
You tell me that we all can change
You tell me we can find something to wash the tears...

And I know of the pain that you feel the same as me,
And I dream of the rain as it falls upon the leaves
And the cracks in the ground like the cracks are in our lives,
They are sealed and now far away

Swine flu: What it is, how to fight it (Q&A)

Swine flu: What it is, how to fight it

By
Liz Szabo, USA TODAY
It's a common respiratory ailment in pigs, but this strain appears to bea subtype never before seen in pigs or humans. Here are answers to questions you may have about swine flu.

Q: What is swine flu?
A: It's a common respiratory disease in pigs that doesn't usually spread to people. When pigs catch this flu, many get quite sick, and 1% to 4% die, according to the World Health Organization. In the past, people have sometimes caught swine flu if they worked directly with pigs.

Q: How is this swine flu virus different?
A: This strain appears to be a subtype not seen before in humans or pigs, with genetic material from pigs, bird and humans, according to WHO. Unlike most cases of swine flu, this one can spread from person to person, said Richard Besser, the acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at a White House press conference Sunday. One of the confirmed cases in the USA caught swine flu from a spouse, who had been to Mexico.

Q: Were pigs the carriers of this virus?
A: It's closer to say that pigs were the mixing bowl for this virus. Birds can't pass bird flu to people. But pigs are uniquely susceptible to getting flu viruses that infect birds. Experts have long worried that a pig would catch a bird strain of the flu and then the virus would mutate inside the pig to a form that could also infect other mammals. That may be what happened in this case. Pigs can also be infected with more than one influenza virus at a time, allowing the viruses to share genes, called "genetic reassortment," creating new and potentially much more virulent viruses.

Q: Can you catch swine flu from eating pork?
A: No, according to WHO. Pigs coming in to slaughter facilities are monitored for flu symptoms, and those that are ill are not allowed to enter the food supply. Cooking also kills the virus. People who work with pigs, however, can catch the virus. The Department of Agriculture is conducting tests to confirm that the food supply is safe, said Janet Napolitano, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

Q: Is there a vaccine against swine flu?
A: No, but government scientists could try to create one, according to the CDC. "We've identified the virus," Besser said. "Should we decide to manufacture a vaccine, we can work toward that goal very quickly." CDC scientists don't know if this year's flu vaccine offers any protection.

AFP/Getty Images
A man walking around Mexico City on Sunday wears a surgical mask to ward off potential infection by the new multi-strain swine flu virus. In the USA, officials say the right type of mask must be worn, or the mask itself might expose wearers to dangerous particles.

Q: What about antivirals? Can they prevent swine flu?
A: This strain of swine flu does appear sensitive to the antiviral drugs Relenza and Tamiflu, but not to amantadine, or Symmetrel, and rimantadine, or Flumadine, Besser said. With normal seasonal flus, if taken within the first 48 hours after symptoms appear, antivirals can help people recover a day or two sooner. Doctors sometimes prescribe antivirals to household members of people with the flu to prevent them from getting sick.

Q: What are the symptoms?
A: The most common symptoms are fever, fatigue, lack of appetite and coughing, although some people also develop a runny nose, sore throat, vomiting or diarrhea, according to the CDC.
Q: What should you do if you have these symptoms?
A: Stay home from work or school, to avoid spreading your illness to other people, Besser said. Don't get on an airplane. People should call their doctors to ask about the best treatment, but should not simply show up at a clinic or hospital that is unprepared for their arrival.

Q: How can people protect themselves?
A: As always, people should wash their hands frequently, Besser said. In the past, the CDC has said there isn't conclusive evidence to support using face masks. Surgical masks are designed to prevent the wearer from spreading germs, but may also catch large respiratory droplets if someone sneezes nearby. In a 2007 statement, the CDC said these masks could be worn if someone needs to go to a crowded place, such as a grocery store, for a short time. N95 respirator masks filter out 95% of particles to prevent the wearer from breathing them in. These must be fitted properly around the nose to create a seal, so they can make breathing difficult.

Q: What does it mean for the government to declare a public health emergency?
A: While the declaration "sounds more severe than it is," Napolitano said Sunday, it will free up funds and allow health officials to use medications and tests that aren't normally used. The government also issued a public health declaration during recent floods in North Dakota and Minnesota, she said, and noted that the government often issues such declarations when hurricanes are approaching. The federal government is also releasing 25% of the 50 million doses of antiviral medications in the nation's Strategic National Stockpile, Napolitano said. The Department of Defense is also making 7 million doses available.

Q: Why has the virus been so much deadlier in Mexico, where 1,300 have become ill and more than 80 people have died, than in the USA?
A: "What we've seen in this country is not anywhere near the severity of what we're seeing in Mexico," Besser said. Doctors don't yet know why cases have been milder in the USA, where only person has been hospitalized, although 20 cases have been confirmed, Besser said.

Birth of Wolverine

Birth of Wolverine
Hugh Jackman reprises the role that made him a superstar in X-Men Origins: Wolverine

The first chapter in the X-Men saga – X-Men Origins: Wolverine – unites Wolverine with several other legends of the X-Men universe, in an epic revolution that pits the mutants against powerful forces determined to eliminate them.

Hugh Jackman reprises the role that made him a superstar, as the fierce fighting machine who possesses amazing healing powers, adamantium claws, and a primal fury known as berserker rage.

The film also introduces a team of mutants, including several whose appearances in the movie series have been long anticipated.

Movie audiences will meet Team X, a covert military cadre composed entirely of mutants. Its members are Logan aka Wolverine; his brother Victor Creed aka Sabretooth, a feral being of unimaginable power; Wade Wilson, later to be known as Deadpool, a high-tech mercenary skilled at swordplay; Agent Zero, an expert tracker and lethal marksman; Wraith, a teleporter; Fred J. Dukes, also known as The Blob, a morbidly-obese and super-strong behemoth; and Bradley, who can manipulate electricity.

Leading them is William Stryker, a figure introduced in X2 but whose origins and motives are now fully explored, for it is Stryker’s complex relationship with Wolverine that defines much of Logan’s past … and future.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine also explores Logan’s tragic romance with Kayla Silverfox. Kayla’s fate triggers Logan’s involvement with the ominous Weapon X programme, a top-secret, billion-dollar military experiment, in which Wolverine and other mutants are key players.

The main story of X-Men Origins: Wolverine – as the saga’s first chapter – is set prior to the events of the earlier pictures, sometime in the 1970s. But the epic sweep of the new film also encompasses flashbacks that span 150 years.

"We wanted to exceed expectations in every way," sums up star and producer Jackman.

Director Gavin Hood says: "Yes, the film needs to be visually stunning, and the action has to be amazing and hard-hitting. But you’ve also got to buy into the story and characters. The core idea of the film is that it’s about someone who is not comfortable with who he is, who’s at war with his own nature. That’s an interesting character to explore."

For Jackman, reprising the role was an opportunity to expand and deepen the three previous films’ exploration of Wolverine.

"We now get to see Logan’s journey and the battle within, as he owns up to the events of his past. Wolverine has certain qualities that are sacred, and number one is that he’s a bad guy."

The story of X-Men Origins: Wolverine begins with Logan seeking solace from a past rife with darkness, working as a lumberjack in the remote Canadian Rockies. Finding love and contentment for the first time in his very long life, Logan leads a seemingly idyllic existence with schoolteacher Kayla Silverfox.

"Kayla is a catalyst for the biggest changes Logan’s ever faced," says Lynn Collins, who took on the role after Jackman had seen her on stage in The Merchant of Venice, opposite Al Pacino.

"She leads him to think differently about the conflict of being human and being a mutant. Their relationship leads him to try and heal old wounds, and experience the consequences and risks of love."

And it’s clear from the beginning that Wolverine has run away from things he needs to face. And one of them is Victor, his brother.

Victor Creed, also known as Sabretooth, possesses powers similar to Logan’s. They are both virtually indestructible and have a feral, super-human strength.

As we learn in flashbacks, Logan (born James Howlett) and Victor did not learn they were brothers until their teens, in the aftermath of a family tragedy that leads to the emergence of Logan’s signature berserker rage and claws that power their way through his flesh as razor-sharp spikes, turning him into something more, and something less, than human.

Logan and Victor flee their home, forming a bond that transcends even brotherhood. "Logan and Victor are a team," says Jackman. "They go through a journey together."

Victor’s savagery in battle leads the two to face a firing squad – but of course mere bullets cannot stop them. Recognising their unique abilities, military officer Col William Stryker asks them to join a special team he is putting together – a covert, black ops unit known in comics lore as Team X.

Meanwhile, Danny Huston who plays Stryker sees his character as a kind of Dr Frankenstein. "In a way, he helped create Wolverine. Stryker both hates and loves Logan, and certainly wants to control him and other mutants."

Team X member John Wraith, who becomes Wolverine’s closest friend, is a teleporter who can appear or disappear at will.

"He’s not to be messed with," says actor and music icon Will.i.am, of the famed group The Black Eyed Peas, who makes his motion picture acting debut in the film.

But in telling this story of "origins", no mutant has greater impact on Logan’s journey than his brother. Appalled by Stryker’s ethically-challenged directives, Logan had abandoned Victor and Team X, but the two brothers cannot be separated by time or by distance because they are two sides of the same person.

It is Victor’s brutal murder of Kayla that triggers Logan’s quest for revenge. When they are reunited, Logan and Victor fight, leaving Logan battered and wounded.

Stryker, again entering Logan’s life and again forever changing it, offers what he calls the only solution: the top-secret Weapon X programme.

"To beat Victor," Stryker tells Logan, "you’re going to have to embrace the other side of you. Become the animal."

In the procedure, Logan’s entire skeleton will be bonded to adamantium, an impenetrable metal alloy that will make Logan virtually indestructible – turning him into the Wolverine we know from the previous X-Men movies.

Wolverine emerges from the ordeal to face yet another betrayal and an epic showdown with Victor and with the next generation of Stryker’s military experiments.
